Instructional technology is defined as “the theory and practice of design, development, utilization, management, and evaluation of processes and resources for learning,” according to the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) Definitions and Terminology Committee. In my words, instructional technology is a means used for promotion of learning; and, it is the adaptation of daily life to educational life through technological devices and software.
We live in modern era and our lives much more depend on technology than anything else. At houses, offices, schools, shopping centers, libraries…etc. everywhere and every time we come across with technology. If I ask someone, what he did last night before going to bed, most probably his answer will be shutting down his computer. There is almost no difference between a computer and a member of the family for most of us. While technology is so widespread, it is indispensible to make use of it in educational area. Then, to what extent do we use technology in our instructions?
As language teachers, in the name of technology we mostly use certain hardware and software. In other words, I can say that the means of instructional technology in language teaching is mainly based on computer usage. As language teachers we commonly use Office programs such as Power Point, and Word, video editing programs such as Movie Maker and Wax, and media player programs such as VLC Media Player and BS player etc, since all these are rich in visuals which make learning easier and permanent. Internet which is the largest library in the world is the best helper for us most of the time since it is a good resource for supplementary materials in teaching. It provides us search engines, blogs, online dictionaries, online books, stories and reading passages, exercises, games, songs videos etc. All these are perfects uses of internet for a language teacher. There are also websites, blogs and forums specially prepared for English Language Teaching. In those websites, blogs or forums, we come across with different language teachers from different countries, and their different instructional techniques. We can adapt some of these techniques there to our classes easily, or we can find alternative exercises, tasks or applications for our students. Here I will give some useful websites which I used for my teachings:
